In Ayurveda, Varicose veins are called Siraja Granthi. It is a condition where the blood veins get enlarged and painful. Thus the patient may find it painful to stand or sit for a couple of hours. According to Ayurveda, there might be multiple reasons to varicose vein. One of the major ones as stated before, might be long sitting or standing for hours. Another reason is the constant pressure on the lower body. Other reasons might be age or the after effects of delivery.

Causes of Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are caused by excessive pressure on the legs. The most common risk factors include:

  • Advancing age

  • Obesity

  • Pregnancy

  • Hormonal Changes

  • Deficiency of vitamin C

  • Standing for long hours over a period of time

  • Engaging in physical activity that strains the legs.

  • Tight clothing

  • Lack of exercise

Symptoms

  • Swollen, twisted veins

  • Large, bluish or purple-appearing bulging veins that you can see under the surface of your skin

  • Swelling in your ankles and feet

  • Painful or achy legs that feel “heavy”

  • Muscle cramping in your legs—particularly at night

  • Itchy legs, especially on your lower leg and ankles

  • Burning or throbbing sensations in your legs

  • Discoloured patches of skin around the area where you have varicose veins
